After Halsey’s departure from Capitol Records was reported in mid-April 2023, on April 29, Halsey posted to their Instagram story a photo of them in the studio, saying; “and I didn’t even have to ask permission.”

The release date was revealed on March 22 on Twitter through a series of cards which featured Roman numerals, which she later clarified in another tweet.
